Manchester Art Fair 2019
'Beyond the North'
Paintings by John Alvaro Caldas, (1934 - 2006), and Maurice Wade, (1917 - 1991).
Where is 'the North' exactly? I suppose the easy answer would be that you know you're in it when you're there. Its geography and architecture, the thicker accents and heavy duty cuisine, the sombre light and cooler temperatures, bound together by the region's economic, social and cultural history, give the North its unique identity. Its art too has, arguably, a distinctive flavour. Just prior to WW2, L S Lowry put the milling throngs of Salford and Manchester on the map and others, including the Ashington Group, (the Pitmen Painters), in the North East and Theodore Major in Wigan added something definably 'northern' to the artistic landscape. At this year's Manchester Art Fair, we will be focusing on the work of two artists, John Alvaro Caldas and Maurice Wade. Although their artistic sensibilities are deeply rooted in the North and North Midlands, they are perhaps closer in spirit to artists of Northern Europe such as Grosz, Beckmann, Hammershoi and Munch.
